ACT Exam Format: Structure and Scoring

The ACT is a multiple-choice test with four required sections and one optional Writing section. The composite score is the average of the four main section scores on a 1–36 scale.

Section Questions Time Score What It Tests
English 75 questions 45 minutes 1–36 Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, rhetorical skills and organisation
Mathematics 60 questions 60 minutes 1–36 Algebra, geometry, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and pre-calculus
Reading 40 questions 35 minutes 1–36 Reading comprehension across fiction, social science, humanities and natural science
Science Reasoning 40 questions 35 minutes 1–36 Data interpretation, graph reading, experimental design — no advanced science required
Writing (Optional) 1 essay 40 minutes 2–12 Persuasive essay on a social issue with three provided perspectives (does not affect composite)
Total (Composite) ~2 hrs 55 min 1–36 Average of English, Math, Reading and Science

    Exam Training

Section-Wise ACT Training at New Cambridge College

    ACT English Training

75 questions in 45 minutes — the fastest-paced ACT section. Tests grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, style and organisation through passage-based questions. New Cambridge College trains the 12 most commonly tested grammar and usage rules, passage-level organisation questions and conciseness — a key skill where students lose points by choosing longer answers over correctly concise ones.

    ACT Mathematics Training

60 questions in 60 minutes. Covers algebra, geometry, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and pre-calculus — a broader range than SAT. A calculator is allowed throughout. New Cambridge College provides full concept coverage from Class 9–10 level through trigonometry and pre-calculus, with particular attention to coordinate geometry and trigonometry, which most differentiate scores in the 28–33 range.

    ACT Reading Training

40 questions across 4 passages in 35 minutes (~8.75 minutes per passage). Passage types are always: Fiction, Social Science, Humanities and Natural Science in that order. New Cambridge College trains speed reading, active annotation and efficient question-answering strategies specific to ACT Reading’s question patterns.

    ACT Science Reasoning Training

The Science Reasoning section is unique to the ACT and the most distinctive difference from SAT. It requires no advanced science knowledge — it tests data interpretation, graph reading, hypothesis evaluation and experimental design analysis. New Cambridge College’s Science training covers three question types: Data Representation (charts and graphs), Research Summaries (experiments) and Conflicting Viewpoints (comparing scientific perspectives). Students who struggle with Science initially tend to improve the most with targeted training.

    ACT Writing (Optional)

40-minute essay responding to a social issue with three provided perspectives. Students must analyse perspectives and develop their own position. New Cambridge College provides a structured essay framework, model essays at multiple scoring levels, and timed writing practice with feedback.

    Tips for Indian Students

ACT Score Ranges and US College Admissions — Tips for Indian Students

Take as many practice tests as possible and evaluate results — figure out patterns in errors and correct them systematically.

Learn to analyse data in graphs, charts and reports — this directly prepares you for Science Reasoning.

Practice all four sections together in a single sitting — not separately — to build stamina for the full test.

Ask faculty, counsellors or parents for help when specific sections are blocking your score.

Understand how each target university uses ACT scores — some colleges weight them equally with GPA; others use them as a minimum threshold for merit aid.

Your essay may be evaluated differently by different universities — check whether your target schools require the Writing section.

    FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — ACT Coaching in Chandigarh

What is the ACT and is it different from SAT?
The ACT (American College Testing) is a US undergraduate admissions test accepted equally with SAT by all US universities. The main differences: ACT includes a Science Reasoning section (SAT does not); ACT is paper-based and linear (SAT is computer-adaptive); ACT covers a broader Math range including trigonometry and pre-calculus.
What ACT score is required for US universities?
Ivy League schools typically see composite scores of 34–36. Top 25 universities see 32–35. Mid-range universities are competitive with 27–31. Many state universities offer automatic merit scholarships for students with 28+ composite scores.
Does India have ACT test centres?
Yes. The ACT is offered at designated test centres in major Indian cities. International test dates are typically in September, October, December, April and June. New Cambridge College assists students in identifying the nearest centre and registering for their preferred date.
How long does ACT preparation take?
Most students at New Cambridge College achieve their target score in 8–12 weeks. Students with specific weakness in Science Reasoning or Math may benefit from 12–14 weeks. A diagnostic test at enrolment determines the exact plan.
    Is ACT easier than SAT?
Neither is objectively easier — they test different things. Students with strong science reasoning and comfort with data interpretation often find ACT Science manageable. Students who find adaptive testing stressful often prefer ACT’s fixed linear format. New Cambridge College recommends a diagnostic of both before deciding.
Can I take both SAT and ACT and submit the better score?
Yes. All US universities accept both, and you are not required to submit both. Many students take both, compare scores and submit whichever is stronger relative to their target school’s admitted profile.
What happens if I score poorly on ACT Science Reasoning?
Science Reasoning is trainable. Students who initially score poorly on Science often show the most improvement with targeted coaching. New Cambridge College’s Science training focuses specifically on the three question types used — Data Representation, Research Summaries and Conflicting Viewpoints — using a structured approach rather than science knowledge.
